Not Your Normal Job Site Item

We are currently in the process of having a new metal roof put on our front porch. The old one was leaking when we moved in and in terrible shape. We've caulked it up a couple of times, but we knew the day was coming when caulk wouldn't fix the problem any longer. That day arrived this summer and so we finally put in an order for the metal roofing in August and it just arrived. Now a team of fellows are out there banging around. While most of them went out for lunch yesterday, one guy stayed behind. He wanted a hot lunch though. He plugged in an extension cord, hauled his full-sized microwave out of the truck and heated up some burritos.

Does the rest of your house have a metal roof, or just the porch? Some people like to hear the rain fall on a metal roof, while others don't care for the noise. If you have oak trees overhead, it can sound like a warzone in autumn.

I have heard of guys working on road crews who will wrap their lunch in aluminum foil and heat their food in/over the hot asphalt container (for lack of a better term). Guess it doesn't pick up that funky tar taste.

Sounds like my kind of guy! :)

Meredith, I'm not complaining. I think it is definitely the wise and frugal thing to do when one is earning workman's wages. It's still funny to see though.

Marc, only our porch roof is metal. When we need a new roof, we might consider putting metal on the rest, but we hope that will be a fairly distant thing. The main roof was put on only about 4 or 5 years ago and so is in perfectly good condition.

I love it. Brings all new meaning to packing your lunch.

Our old house had a tin roof. I loved the sound when it rained.
