Roses and Other Plants
Thanks to suggestions from Patricia for reputable places to buy roses, I finally stopped ogling all the possibilities and finally put in an order for my garden. I hope they don't take too long to get here, because I can hardly wait to get them planted. What did I order? One William Baffin, one Antique, and two of the Lavender Floorshow, I won't mention all the others I wanted to buy. But I'll wait until I dig some more flower beds before ordering more -- maybe another year or two.
In other flower news, my earliest blooming day lily is already putting on a nice show, my Tennessee coneflower is blooming and my purple echinacea (which is different from the Tennessee variety) is about to bloom, as are my Asian lilies. I need to go get more fertilizer, but all in all, things are looking good.
And as an aside, I love the soaker hoses we laid down last summer. I feel a tad lazy not going out and watering daily, but merely turning on the hose and returning later to turn it off sure is nice. Just wait until I put in a timer system!
I still find it strange that you are ahead of us here in Dee Cee. I know you're further south, but for some reason I always assumed all those mountains made a difference. Apparently not.
I've got one or two buds on my purple echinacea, but nothing close to flowering yet. My peonies and roses are starting to open and the wisteria will soon. Some of the columbine is already in flower and there are several buds on the foxglove, yarrow and salvia, but those flowers are still weeks away.
The previous owner planted a great many day lilies out front but I've stopped looking forward to them - the deer usually come in and level them before their blooms open up. On the other hand, the lily-of-the-valley has (so far) escaped Bambi and his chums, so maybe we'll get lucky this year.
Posted by: Robert the Llama Butcher at May 9, 2006 11:38 AMOooh, you went with Heirloom. Remember, they will be TINY when you get them and they will want VERY BIG HOLES. Also, you'll want to avoid putting them into the same soil roses have grown in before. I am SUCH a mother-in-law about roses!
I wish I were close enough to nip over and help... and to watch these beauties come on in your garden.
